Jim LaMarche

Jim LaMarche (K-1) Growing up in Kewaskum, WI gave this child of two teachers plenty of quiet, alone time to explore and pretend in the surrounding woods and waterways. After completing his degree in art from the University of Wisconsin, he joined VISTA and worked to develop curricular materials for Native American schools in North Dakota. This experience helped him to see that it was possible to make a living as an artist and gave him exposure to a number of areas such as photography, illustration, graphic design and writing.

After his assignment was complete, he moved to California and worked as a carpenter’s assistant while he built a portfolio. He started his illustration career in 1979 with My Daddy Don’t Go to Work, and after making a name for himself illustrating books such as Rainbabies and Albert has begun writing and illustrating his own stories, beginning with The Raft. His illustrations seem to glow and are beautifully detailed and expressive. He currently lives in Santa Cruz, California with his wife and three sons.
